While I was there with my cousins, we went hiking in this amazing national reserve called the Pine Barrens (also called the Pinelands). It’s a pine-forested stretch of land that includes rolling hills, valleys, swamps, sandy stretches and streams. But look out for the Jersey Devil and the Pine Barren Witch (The Blair Witch was based on the latter) which are both said to roam the empty stretches of scary dark woods at night looking for lost travelers. A lot of stories circulate about the supernatural nature of this forest, so read up on it first so you can freak out your fellow hikers like I did…

About - About New Jersey

When I think of New Jersey, stereotypes inevitably cloud my vision – images of gangsters, factory towns with miles of industrial wasteland like Newark and Elizabeth, and gum-snapping city girls with big hair. But… as with all sterotypes, there’s a smidge of truth there, but New Jersey is so much more than that. Okay, unless you’ve been there before and gotten around quite a bit, you’re not going to believe this, but New Jersey, aka “The Garden State” is still the single state where you are most likely to find small farm stands, fields of pumpkins and cranberries and champion thoroughbred horses than any other state in the U.S. It’s also loaded with great campgrounds, river rafting tours, hiking trails and miles and miles of some great beaches all up and downt he Jersey Shore, which locals have long flocked to in the hot summer months. So if you’re looking for getaway, that’s not too far away, New Jersey is a surprising place.

Some of the biggest battles of the American Revolution happened right here in this third state of the Union. And if you’re a history buff, you should definitely check out these locations in Monmouth, Trenton and Princeton. At Princeton, Washington pulled a little trickeroo and surprise ambushed the British and stomped their unprepared asses. New Jersey has gotten a bad wrap as an overly industrialized, polluted factory state. But that underscores the fact that New Jersey was the Silicon Valley of the Industrial Revolution. Edison did a lot of his best work here in Menlo Park, and the assembly line that was made so famous by Ford was originally implemented by the good working people of New Jersey. So while it struggles with it’s unusual split identity of factory-scape/farmscape, there’s no denying that New Jersey was formative in both an agricultural and industrial center for the United States.
